[OSS Review] Zustand
ROUTE06 CTO, Co-founder 👨🏻💻
This article shares my research findings on an OSS library used in Giselle.
While originally written as an internal memo, I've structured it to be helpful for other developers considering similar OSS adoption decisions.
1. Overview of Zustand
Name: Zustand
Summary: Zustand is a small, fast, and unopinionated state-management library for React. Described as providing the “bear necessities for state management,” it offers a minimal API and high performance by avoiding the boilerplate of context providers and reducers.
Core Features:
Simple Store Creation & Selective Subscriptions: Create a store with a single function,
create(), and subscribe to specific state slices in components. This prevents unnecessary re-renders, a common issue with React Context.Hooks-First API with No Provider: Use a hook to access state anywhere in the component tree without needing to wrap the application in a global
<Provider>."Vanilla" JS Support: A
createStoreAPI is available for use outside of React, making it easy to integrate with non-React code, use in server-side rendering (SSR), or for testing.Built-in Middleware: Comes with an official ecosystem of middleware for common patterns, including
persist(forlocalStorage),devtools(for Redux DevTools), andimmer(for mutative-style updates).TypeScript-First: Designed with strong TypeScript support and clear patterns for type-safe state management.
2. About the Organization: Poimandres (pmndrs)
GitHub Org / Maintainers: Poimandres (pmndrs)
Summary: Poimandres (pmndrs) is a well-regarded open-source developer collective that creates and maintains a popular suite of libraries primarily for the React ecosystem. Their projects are known for their quality, performance, and cohesive design. Notable projects include state management libraries (Zustand, Jotai, Valtio) and a comprehensive toolkit for 3D graphics with React (@react-three/fiber, drei). Daishi Kato is a primary maintainer across the state management libraries.
Development Activity: Zustand is highly active and widely adopted. As of September 2025, it has over 54k stars on GitHub. The repository shows frequent releases and is actively maintained with zero runtime dependencies, reflecting a commitment to stability and performance.
3. Software License: MIT
License:
MITNotes: The MIT license is permissive, allowing for commercial use, modification, and distribution with very few restrictions. It is generally compatible with other permissive and copyleft licenses, making it a safe choice for most commercial and open-source projects.
4. Key Use Cases & Examples
Major Use Cases:
Vercel's Next.js Examples: The official Next.js repository includes an example demonstrating Zustand integration, which serves as a best-practice guide for SSR-friendly usage.
Industry Adoption: Companies like Hotjar reportedly use Zustand, indicating its reliability and uptake in production environments.
Potential Applications:
Global UI State: Managing state for modals, toasts, feature flags, or themes without the boilerplate of context.
Multi-Step Forms & Wizards: Centralizing form state and actions in a single store, with components subscribing only to the data they need.
Client-Side Caching: Acting as a lightweight client-side cache for data, especially when combined with the
persistmiddleware.React Native: Works seamlessly in React Native, often paired with
AsyncStorageorMMKVfor persistent state.
